The next step
During sessions, it will not only be your relationship that is discussed but also other important factors such as work, stress, finance and family. A therapist will ease you into the process of discussing your feelings, and there will be times when you can be quiet, but you must come to understand that therapy is pointless unless you are willing to make an effort. It may be a good idea to keep notes of therapy sessions as this can be a reminder of what you have talked about, and is a good way to assess any improvements you have made.
Every therapist’s technique will differ, but a session will typically involve a mixture of talking and self-help techniques. When going as a couple it is likely that you will end up talking more to one another than the therapist. This is because you can discuss sensitive issues in a controlled environment, where your emotions can be better prohibited from getting out of control.
