What is Genital Warts?

Genital warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV), of which there are many different types. Some cause warts on the hand or genital area, and some can lead to conditions such as cervical cancer. It is best to have cervical screening tests to be safe. It can be contracted through sex or the coming together of two people’s skin. It can also be transmitted through oral or anal sex, and there is the chance that a pregnant mother can pass it on to her baby.

Symptoms of Genital Warts

Warts generally develop between two weeks to a few months. Warts look like bumps on the skin and can also be located inside the body. Warts will usually itch or become inflamed, and can develop in a variety of ways.

What treatment is available for Genital Warts?

Treatment will involve an examination of the genital and anal area, through the use of weak vinegar to help identify warts. There is also a vaccination available to help prohibit the contraction of the infection in the first place. Treatments include a special cream, surgery to remove warts, heat or freezing treatment and an injection into warts. Treatment may need to be repeated. The treatment can be somewhat painful, and you should inform your doctor if you are currently pregnant.
