Intrauterine system (IUS)

What is it?

The IUS is a tiny plastic device that is placed into your womb, where it discharges the hormone progestogen. The device can work for a total of five years, during which you will not need to worry about using contraception. The IUC is a reversible procedure.

How does it work?

The IUS is inserted into the womb, where it discharges the hormone progestogen. This works to prevent the ovulation process, and also makes it more difficult for sperm to reach an egg.

How dependable is it?

The IUS is 99% effective. Therefore, it is best used along with another type of contraception, such as a condom. The IUS does not protect against STIs.

Other important information

The IUS can make periods less painful, and is a procedure that can be reversed. Possible side-effects include mood swings, and there is a slight chance of an infection during the initial period after insertion. There is no link to infertility.
