It can be difficult to find a balance between a relationship and work. Add to this time you wish to spend with friends, family and partaking in other pursuits and it can seem like there are just not enough hours in the day. For many, the boundaries between work and home life have become hazy, with work often needing to be taken home in order to keep up with other colleagues, only leading to dispute and partners feeling neglected.

With both partners in a relationship now typically pursuing their own careers it can be extremely difficult to make time for one another. But time spent together is vital if a relationship is to survive. Too much time spent apart causes feelings of being unloved, and can lead to some people seeking the attentiveness of others through an affair. If you don’t make time to enjoy one another’s company then it can seem like your relationship is just slipping away.

When you first start out in a relationship there is a buzz, an expectation that this is the one that could go the distance. With time this begins to fade, and this is when you really need to start making an effort. In order for a relationship to remain strong you must allot time to be with one another. Below are some tips that can help you to make the balance between work and the rest of your life more manageable:

  • Make time for one another – It may sound easy but this can be difficult if your work life is bogging you down. And although it may seem unromantic the results can be just as invigorating. Try to have one evening in which you are able to spend the whole time together, but also remember that time relaxing together in front of the television on the sofa is just as important.
  • Romantic get together – A romantic evening can work to keep things ticking over. This can help to keep desire high and each partner longing for the next romantic encounter.
  • Change your schedule – Sometimes, due to work and other obstacles, it may not be possible to organise a romantic get together each week. Therefore, it may be best to make arrangements for every two weeks. As long as both partners are comfortable with this arrangement for the time being then it can work.
  • Things don’t need to be perfect – Time spent together is more important than making sure there is a home-made meal ready. Make the most of short-cuts, like ready meals, if they are necessary to spending time together.
  • Outside help – Family, friends and neighbours can be a real help if you wish to spend an evening together. If a friend offers to take the kids of your hands for the evening, and you know them well, then this can be ample opportunity to have a romantic evening.
  • Accept the inevitable – If work is bogging you down, and this is going to be the case for a while, then you may just need to accept it. As long as you know things will inevitably change, and you are both happy to wait, then your relationship can be put on the back burner for the time being.
  • Decide what is more important – If you are still having difficulty making time for one another then you need to decide what is more important. There may be a hobby you could drop, or some other pursuit that can be postponed. However, it must not be just the one partner making sacrifices, as this can cause feelings of resentment.
  • Therapy – Although it may seem daunting, a therapist can help you as a couple to discuss what you could do to better this predicament.
